Its when your liver cant filter out toxins like it should. Most of the times it is caused by alcoholism but sometimes it stems from other diseases like Hepatitus C. My aunt has the liver disease but never drank and doesn't have Hep C.

In cirrhosis of the liver, scar tissue replaces normal, healthy tissue, blocking the flow of blood through the organ and preventing it from working as it should.

It can be caused by a number of things: alcoholic liver disease, drugs, having chronic hepatitis B, C, or D, autoimmune hepatitis, inherited diseases, etc.

The link below provides excellent information on the disease.

Hope this helps, God bless!

Cirrhosis is a consequence of chronic liver disease characterized by replacement of liver tissue by fibrous scar tissue as well as regenerative nodules (lumps that occur as a result of a process in which damaged tissue is regenerated), leading to progressive loss of liver function. Cirrhosis is most commonly caused by alcoholism and hepatitis C, but has many other possible causes.
